Overview:

Our general objective will be to attain a thematic understanding of the time period of the first בית המקדש as presented by the נביא and commentary, discussed or assigned. The primary emphasis will be placed on appreciating the central issues dealt with by חז'ל and the commentaries. In addition, we will work on developing skills for translating and interpreting the passages, classical commentaries, and relevant חז'ל.

Class Expectations:

Ø A significant component of class participation will be חברותא style preparation of selected passages from the נביא, חז'ל, and various commentaries. Students will be expected to reflect on their conclusions and participate in a guided discussion at the end of the חברותא session.

Ø An emphasis will be placed on understanding and explaining various חז'ל’s and מפרשים relevant to the text.

Ø Each student is required to record material discussed in class. A loose-leaf binder is highly recommended for this class.

Ø Students will be held responsible for any material discussed in class in addition to the text.
Ø There will be a test approximately once every 3 weeks. When deemed appropriate, a writing assignment or group project will be given in lieu of or in addition to a test.

Ø There will be a cumulative list of ביטויים and מאמרים, list of מלכי יהודה וישראל, נביאים, and אישי התנ'ך that the class will collect over the year.

Making up for excused tests will be the student’s responsibility. Students will have no more than 1 week to make up tests before point deduction and/or a zero is given.

Approximate grade breakdown per marking period:

Class Participation 20%
Tests and Quizzes 50%
Writing Assignments and Projects 20%
Notes 10%
