גמרא ב'
Columbus Torah Academy
Rabbi Weitz – rabbiweitz@torahacademy.org

This year we will be learning the פרק ג' (ראוהו ב'ד) of מס' ראש השנה

Goals & Objectives

At the conclusion of each סוגיא, students will:
Demonstrate an understanding of the basic questions and answers of the גמרא
Accurately read, punctuate, and translate the גמרא

Obtain a fluency in the ראשונים and אחרונים that we covered

Gain a familiarity with the questions that form the basis of the crucial halachic issues

General Skill Development:
Mastering the meanings and implications of key גמרא phrases
Increasing גמרא vocabulary and familiarity of the common ראשי תיבות
The capability to independently indentify the structure of any given סוגיא
How to ask analytical questions that penetrate the crux of a סוגיא
Knowledge of the main מפרשים and how to effectively utilize them

הלכה
1. For the first 5 minutes of each class, approximately, we will learn קצור שולחן עורך. This will be done primarily in חברותא. Students will be expected to know the הלכה as it will be a component of the tests and /or standalone quizzes as deemed appropriate.

גמרא ב'
Course Syllabus
Rabbi Weitz
rabbiweitz@torahacadamy.org

Overview:
This class will have two primary objectives. This first will be to attain a comprehensive understanding of the פרק(ים) we will cover, starting from the גמרא and working our way through the commentary and halachic outcome. Additionally, we will focus on acquiring the skills needed to accomplish this independently (i.e. make a “laining”). Strong emphasis will be placed on appreciating the structure of the גמרא and identifying the thrust of each dialogue.

Class Expectations:
Ø A significant component of class participation will be חברותא style preparation and/or review of selected passages from גמרא, commentary, and קצור. Students will be expected to obtain and share the basic facts through this guided חברותא session.

Ø Students will be expected to record the basic question and answer sequence (“shakla vi’tarya”) of each section we cover. This component will be cumulative.

Ø Students are expected to be able to read, punctuate, and explain the גמרא and commentary we covered in class and we be asked to do so at regular intervals.

Ø Each student is required to record material discussed in class in their own notebooks - a loose-leaf binder is recommended. Besides for acquiring a fluency in the actual text, students will be held responsible for any materials or commentary discussed orally.

Ø There will be approximately a quiz every week and a test every three weeks.

When deemed appropriate, a writing assignment or group project will be given in addition to or in lieu of a test.

Making up for excused tests will be the student’s responsibility. Students will have no more than 1 week to make up tests before point deduction and/or a zero is given.

Approximate Grade Breakdown per marking Period:
Class Participation/ 25%
חברותא Time
Tests and Quizzes 40%
Reading and Textual Fluency 20%
Notes 15%
